An armed gunman allegedly robbed a Virginia Beach-area 7-Eleven recently. Authorities responded swiftly and reported making an arrest in the case. It all happened within hours of the crime.
The suspect in the case is a juvenile male. At the time this post is being written, the 17-year-old was reportedly still being held in Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center. As with any situation like this, the criminal charges against him are serious and our hope is that he has contacted an experienced attorney to work on his behalf.
The nature of the case as reported in the media makes it stand out from many others. First, there is the element that the person charged is a juvenile. Second, the scope of the charges under which he has been booked is such that his entire future could be hanging in the balance.
As things stand now, the youth is under suspicion of armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and of wearing a mask in public. All these charges stem from events that police say occurred early in the morning of July 31.
According to Virginia Beach police, an armed and masked individual entered the 7-Eleven and demanded money from the lone clerk in the store. The suspect reportedly received an undisclosed amount of cash and then fled on foot.
Officers responding to the call say they began to scour the neighborhood and came across what they described as a suspicious vehicle with someone inside. Somehow they came to the determination that the person in the vehicle was responsible for the store robbery and made the arrest.
Every case is different, of course, but one legal question that seems to be pertinent in this one is whether police had legitimate cause to investigate the subject they ended up arresting. It will also be important to learn what evidence police relied on to decide that the person arrested should be charged in the robbery.
