Former police officer convicted of drug crimes faces reduced penalties

When people face criminal charges of any kind, they may feel that the cards are stacked against them. However, a strong criminal defense may mitigate any potential consequences.

In some instances, it is appropriate to vigorously fight the charges. Depending on the case and the evidence prosecutors have against an individual, a plea agreement may be appropriate.

Recently, a former Norfolk police officer was sentenced to two years behind bars after pleading guilty to two felony drug charges. However, a judge suspended the time as long as the former law enforcement officer maintains good behavior for the next four years. He is also required to complete 100 hours of community service.

The 38-year-old man admitted to selling steroids, syringes and marijuana to an undercover officer outside a fitness center in 2011. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped 11 other drug charges.

Although the man in this case will face reduced penalties, the drug charges appear to have affected his career. He resigned from his post with the Norfolk Police Department a day after he was arrested. He served on the force for more than a decade.

It is clear from this case that drug charges can impact a person's entire life. If convicted, an individual could face fines and significant time behind bars. Drug charges may also affect an individual's current and future employment opportunities.

Because the stakes are so high, individuals in Virginia Beach who face drug charges would be wise to consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney will investigate every aspect of a case to determine the best course of action going forward.
