Charges against University of Virginia student dropped

When someone is facing a criminal charge it may feel as though they do not have any options. While it is understandable why someone might feel that way the reality is they do have options regarding how to defend themselves. That first option involves securing the assistance of a criminal defense lawyer. Seeking the assistance of a legal professional could have a major impact on the outcome of your case.

While most people facing criminal charges are likely concerned with securing a not guilty verdict there are other ways in the case could be resolved in your favor. A student from the University of Virginia knows this firsthand. Charges against the 20-year-old man were recently dropped.

The young man was arrested this past spring outside of a bar. Following his arrest he was charged with the following:

  • Public intoxication or swearing
  • Obstruction of justice with force

In the course of the arrest the man, who is black, was bloodied and pinned to the ground. He was arrested by officers from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Following the arrest the videos and images of the arrest caused unrest in the University of Virginia community and students took issue with the arrest prompting Gov. Terry McAuliffe to create a task force and order an investigation and training of the liquor agency’s officers. In addition, a state police investigation was conducted.

While the results of those investigations undoubtedly contributed to the charges against the man being dropped, it is fair to say that his attorney played an important role as well.
