Being accused of any kind of crime can be a scary and stressful experience. An attorney may be able to help those charged with a drug crime clear their name or achieve a reduction in a sentence. Recently, a Virginia man chose to plead guilty to distributing heroin that led to the death of a woman.
Reports indicate that the man admitted to selling heroin to a woman who overdosed and died the next day while in the hospital. In addition to admitting to selling the drugs on that occasion, the man also allegedly admitted to selling a total of 48 grams of heroin in separate transactions over the course of four months. Authorities claim that he was also in possession of about 1 kilogram of heroin and 2 kilograms of cocaine at that time.
The man had been charged in a six-count indictment of conspiracy to distribute heroin. He recently pleaded guilty to one charge as part of a plea agreement that will drop the other five counts at his sentencing. He will face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million.
As evidenced by the consequences this man may face, being charged with a drug crime could lead to serious repercussions. Anyone facing such charges would likely benefit from consulting an experienced Virginia criminal defense attorney as soon as possible after the charges have been made. An attorney could work toward safeguarding a person's legal rights as well as help them build a strong defense to present before the court.
