Many people enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages, whether in a social situation or as a way to relax at the end of the day. However, getting behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol could lead to a DWI charge. One Virginia man is now facing this charge in addition to several other charges after his alleged involvement in a fatal car accident.
According to the Virginia State Police, the man was traveling on Interstate 81 when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road. His car struck a disabled tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder of the roadway. Tragically, a passenger riding with him was not wearing her seat belt and was killed. Neither the man driving the car nor the truck driver were injured.
Police arrested the man at the scene of the accident. He was charged with reckless driving and driving while intoxicated on a suspended license. Authorities stated that he was previously convicted of two DWIs as well as other crimes involving narcotics and theft. He is currently being held at Western Virginia Regional Jail.
Anyone facing a DWI charge would likely benefit from consulting an experienced Virginia criminal defense attorney to provide assistance with regard to any legal proceedings related to the charges. In addition to representing a client in court, an attorney could work to protect a client's rights and build a strong defense. By assessing clients' individual situations, the attorney could work to obtain the best possible outcomes for them.
