Social media has changed the way many people live their lives. Many users stay in contact with friends and family, conduct business and meet new people through websites such as Facebook. However, police in Virginia argue that a 27-year-old sailor used the platform to conduct a sexual relationship with a girl under the age of 13. He is now accused of rape.
The victim is said to have alerted police to the relationship earlier this year. According to accounts, the relationship between the 27-year-old man and the juvenile began in May 2015. The alleged victim claims that it continued throughout the summer.
Court papers claim that the man contacted the girl again in Jan. 2017. She accuses the man of discussing their previous relationship and sending her inappropriate pictures at that time. He also allegedly invited her to his residence. Police took the man into custody soon after the allegations were made. Although they claim that the defendant confirmed many details provided by the girl during initial police interviews, it is unclear exactly what details they believe he confirmed.
Being the focus of a police investigation can be intimidating. Some people may be unaware of the impact of what they believe to be innocuous statements could have on their case. As a result, those in Virginia charged with rape and other crimes often benefit from having an experienced defense attorney providing advice from the early stages of a case, including during initial questioning. In addition to receiving valuable advice, defendants with such a professional on their side often have more confidence that their rights will be protected throughout the criminal process.
