Man accused of sexual assault, other criminal charges in Virginia

The human mind is a complicated, amazing organ. Unfortunately, it can also be unreliable, at times. In times of extreme stress, a person's memory may become less than reliable, making it difficult for victims to recall certain details of alleged attack, for example. As a result, prosecutors must ensure that there is sufficient evidence to prove guilt in cases involving allegations of sexual assault and other crimes beyond an identification made by a victim.

It is unclear at this time how police in Virginia connected a man to an alleged attack on a woman. The incident is said to have occurred one day in late February. According to police reports, the 27-year-old woman was working to move out of her apartment at the time of the attack. She claims that a man came in through a door that was open and told the woman he had a gun before he sexually assaulted her.

Additionally, police say that a neighbor heard the victim crying and ran to help. However, the alleged assailant reportedly threw her to the ground by her hair. The next day, a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. He now faces multiple charges, including abduction with intent to defile, among several other charges.

A victim of sexual assault deserves justice. However, the arrest of an innocent person increases the injustice. In order to help prevent a wrongful conviction, Virginia prosecutors are required to meet a high burden of proof. Failure to do so must result in an acquittal of charges.
