There are a variety of different types of alternative vehicles on the roads. While options like a moped certainly have their advantages, operators could face additional risks due to their lower visibility, slower speeds and fewer protections for drivers in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, a man in Virginia has recently lost his life after the moped he was driving was involved in a collision with a pickup truck driven by a man who now faces a DUI charge in connection with the accident.
The incident happened one night on a day in early January. Police have accused the 47-year-old driver of a pickup truck of crossing into oncoming traffic. As a result, the truck allegedly collided head-on with a moped.
The truck then continued on, coming to a rest when it struck a tree. The moped operator, a 22-year-old man, is said to have died at the scene. The pickup truck driver suffered serious injuries but is expected to live. He has since been arrested, charged with driving under the influence.
Many of the details surrounding the case are unclear at this time, including how police officers determined that the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Accidents happen frequently for a variety of reasons other than a driver who is under the influence. Because of the circumstances surrounding the case, the pickup driver is likely facing several important decisions regarding the DUI charge he faces. In order to ensure that he is properly prepared to make such decisions, he may opt to hire an experienced criminal defense counsel in Virginia to help him understand his options and the potential ramifications of each.
