Law enforcement officers are on the lookout for, and make arrests regularly, of individuals who are accused of breaking certain laws. While those arrests are sometimes the result of police being in the right place at the right time, other times they are the result of police focusing on certain individuals.
Over the course of the past couple of months, a nationwide initiative focused on rounding up people accused of, among other things, the following:
- Child molestation
- Sexual assault
- Aggravated assault
- Attempted murder
Throughout the nation, the U.S. Marshal led initiative resulted in the apprehension of more than 7,100 people. In the Eastern District of Virginia alone, more than 140 fugitives were taken into custody. Multiple entities contributed to the initiative in Virginia.
It is possible that some of the individuals who were arrested as a part of the sweep are unsure of what steps they should take. Regardless of what they are accused of, the first thing they should do is contact a criminal defense lawyer for assistance. After taking into consideration all of the circumstances surrounding the alleged criminal act, that individual can help to determine the best approach to take. While for many it will be building a strong defense, in other situations it could make sense to reach a plea agreement before trial.
The criminal justice system can be a confusing, scary thing for someone who has not encountered it previously. Because of this it is not a good idea to go at it on one’s own. For more information on how we might be able to help you, please see our website.
